Dear Grassroots Mappers / Public Laboratory community:

We have some great news to share: the Public Laboratory for Open Technology & Science has just been awarded a Knight News Challenge grant to support citizen-based, grassroots data gathering and research.

We are grateful to be working with all of you and want to let you know that we will be focused on further developing our hardware and software tools, and supporting on-the-ground initiatives.

H2S strip batch 1 for testing made 4/26

Megan and I made a batch for testing the H2S strips last night. We made 66 strips in all. We could only make 1 batch as we ran out of drying space in the dark room. Some of the strips stuck together and had to be discarded. They are to be marked with red dots so we can compare strips made with this batch of Ilford paper with strips made from a second batch of Ilford paper. We hypothesize that the results will vary slightly between batches of Ilford paper depending on the quantity of Silver Halide in the paper.

Making tent bags for photopaper test

The advantage of using the tent container is that it can be flat packed and shipped in an envelope and then sealed up at the end of the test and shipped back rather in expensively.

It is important to use heavy duty plastic in order to prevent light contamination, 2mil or great should be good. Here is a website to order the bags, only bad thing is you have to order a carton.

Results: Container Testing for Photopaper Test Strips #2

Container Test #2
4/1/2012-4/4/4/2012

Results: Designs 1, 2, 5 and 6 were effected least by light. The control was left out in the same location as other containers but in open light. It should be noted that fixing did not eliminate discoloration from light exposure.

Results: Container Testing for Photopaper Test Strips #1

Container Test #1
3/28/2012-4/4/4/2012

Results: Results showed that regardless of location the black VCR tape container were able to protect the photo paper from light exposure. The side that was open to the light was exposed, this was not corrected with by fixing.

Making a small hamsterball

Nowadays, I am trying to make a Small hamsterball.

This is a set of the small hamsterball

Originally, wheels are for cars.

But in my project, the wheels function as support parts.

Summary of Lionel Milberger’s Copper Test

Focus of test is on residential ambient air from a fraction of a ppm to <100ppm

Considerations:

• H2S is highly soluble in water and water vapor in air
• Shortcoming of handheld instruments is that that do not
measure the H2S dissolved in water vapors. These tests
are especially inaccurate at exposure levels < 100ppm,
which are the levels of interest for this study.
• H2S is heavier than air and thus gathers in low places
• Specimens should not remain in the ambient air longer
